CHAMBER PARTNERS WITH SCHOOLS TO GRANT TEACHER WISHES

The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce’s business education partnership committee helps enhance the quality of education in the Lowcountry by creating and supporting partnerships between local businesses and schools. Project Connect is a community-wide program that connects community businesses and individuals with teachers and their wish lists for classroom supplies. Since the program’s inception, over $35,000 has been used to purchase needed school supplies. If you would like to donate an item from a teacher’s wish list, contact 843-785-3673.

HHSO’S MARY BRIGGS TO RETIRE 

Mary Briggs will retire as president and CEO of The Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra at the end of the year. The orchestra’s board of directors has announced Alan Jordan as her successor. Jordan is currently the executive director of the Delaware Symphony Orchestra. Briggs led the orchestra for 12 remarkable years. 

BISHOP EYE CENTER ADDS OPHTHALMOLOGIST AND RETINA SPECIALIST

Dr. Carl W. Baker has joined the team at Bishop Eye Center’s New River location as an ophthalmologist and retina specialist. He is a graduate of the University of Kentucky and attended the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. Previously, Baker served as chief resident in ophthalmology at the Medical University of South Carolina. He is engaged in clinical research for macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts and retinal vein occlusions. 

TIDEWATCH EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT NOW OPEN

Coastal Carolina Hospital will now include the Tidewatch Emergency Department. The 10,000 square foot facility has 12 treatment areas, 24/7 physician coverage and represents a $15 million investment in the community. The types of acute illnesses and injuries treated at a traditional ER can now be treated at Tidewatch Emergency Department. These include allergic reactions, bone fractures, chest pain, head injuries, seizures, stroke and other urgent medical conditions.

HHI GETS NEW ART STUDIO

Sonja Griffin Evans has opened a new art studio and gallery bearing her name at 32 Palmetto Bay Road Suite10A. Her paintings, mixed media art and handmade jewelry are influenced by Gullah culture. Griffin Evans is an internationally acclaimed artist who was born and raised in Beaufort.

FUSION FIT BLUFFTONKICKS OFF WORKOUTS

Fusion Fit Bluffton is a new group training program of 45-minute workouts that encompass strength, metabolic training, and movement to help people burn fat and boost metabolism, lose weight and get lean, toned and fit. The small group, strength-training based workouts are offered at Move Fitness in Bluffton and Wellness Institute Physical Therapy in Okatie.

ADVANCED AESTHETICS ACADEMY OPENS IN HARDEEVILLE

Advanced Aesthetics Academy, owned by Heidi Daly, has opened on Dermis Avenue in Hardeeville. The academy will offer instruction in aesthetic treatments, clinical rotations and elements of running a spa like client service, inventory and retailing. Students will earn more than 450 hours of training and will be able to apply for licensure as an aesthetician. Daly is a longtime resident of Hilton Head Island who has been an aesthetics instructor for nine years. Enrollment is open now. 

SEA PINES SELECTS ARCHITECT, CELEBRATES INSTRUCTOR

Sea Pines Country Club has selected golf course architect Phil Smith to create a masterplan for its Arnold Palmer-designed Club Course. Smith has more than 30 years of experience working with PGA Tour and golf course design legends Jack Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf. He has led numerous high-profile renovations, including a complete redesign of the Phoenician Golf Club. 

SPRENGER HEALTH CARE OPENS IN BLUFFTON

Sprenger Health Care Systems, a skilled nursing and assisted living community in Bluffton, celebrated its grand opening in March. Sprenger Health Care Bluffton offers a skilled nursing wing with 60 private rooms and 45 private assisted-living apartments. In addition, it offers a 3,000-square-foot state-of-the-art therapy gym, multiple gourmet eateries including a pub and lounge, plus an outdoor enclosed patio with fireplace. Sprenger Health Care has locations throughout Ohio, Indiana and South Carolina.

PURE BARRE HILTON HEAD HAS NEW OWNER

Jenna Irvin is the new owner of Pure Barre Hilton Head in Shelter Cove. She graduated from High Point University with a degree in sports management and purchased the studio after moving to Hilton Head Island after graduation. She previously was the owner of a Pure Barre studio in Frederick, Maryland.
