Summer is in full swing in the Lowcountry. If you’re looking for some at-home ideas to keep the family busy, we’ve rounded up 10 unique staycation ideas to try this summer.
BACKYARD MOVIE FESTIVAL
Find a low-cost outdoor movie projector on Amazon (or check Facebook Marketplace for a deal.) Hang a white sheet between two trees, then spread out blankets or beach chairs in the backyard. Kick back and enjoy your favorite family movie under the stars.
CREATE A FOOD BOARD
Charcuterie boards are no longer the only game in town. Have fun creating a delicious food board the whole family can enjoy. Try a brunch board, complete with bacon and eggs, plus pancakes and all the toppings. Or if your family has a sweet tooth, create a dessert board with candies, cakes, cookies and other treats.
If you’re an adventurous crew, a camping trip in the backyard will be an experience your family won’t forget. Set up a tent, grab your sleeping bags and head out back for a night with nature. If you don’t have an ideal yard for this set up, go camping inside: pitch your tent in the living room or make one out of blankets and pillows. Find recipes to “roast” marshmallows in the oven and listen to nature sounds on YouTube.
FAMILY BOARD GAME TOURNAMENT
Everyone loves a little healthy competition! Host a family board game tournament featuring quick and easy games like Candyland, UNO, Guess Who, or whatever is age appropriate. Set up different gaming stations throughout the house and play each other one-on-one. Buy a large poster board and create a board game bracket so you can keep track of who is winning.
HOST A SPA DAY
Every vacation calls for a bit of relaxation. Host a family spa day and find some much needed R&R. Start with fresh fruit smoothies for breakfast. Make a pitcher of lemon and cucumber water to sip on throughout the day. Find a yoga class on YouTube and practice together in the backyard. Spend the rest of the day meditating, reading, and listening to soothing music.
HOLD A COOKING OR BAKING COMPETITION
Search for a family-friendly dinner or dessert recipe online (try to find one with a lot of steps.) Print the recipe out, set up cooking stations for each member of your family, then set a timer and see who wins. For younger children, be sure to pick easier or no-bake recipes like trail mix or Rice Krispie treats.
TAKE ON A FAMILY PROJECT
There’s no better time to take on a family project than during the summer! If you’ve been talking about adding a tree house or a fire pit to your home, Google the steps to DIY one together. Take a trip to the hardware store to pick out materials and work together to make it happen. Enjoy the time you spend together creating something new.
PLANT A VEGETABLE OR HERB GARDEN
Get your hands dirty as a family and plant a delicious herb or vegetable garden in the backyard. Dig, plant and label the garden, then water it throughout the summer for a fall harvest.
TAKE A FAMILY BIKE RIDE
We are so blessed to live in an area with beautiful biking trails and winding beaches. Spend a morning or afternoon on a bike ride as a family. Stop along the trails and make a list of any interesting wildlife you encounter. When you get home, Google what you found as a family and learn more about different native species.
No matter the at-home adventure, stepping away from constant technology is a great opportunity to get away from the allure of our devices. When enjoying family time, put away all phones or tablets and focus on each other. With less distractions, the family will be more engaged. This will also help family members focus on a task instead of being distracted by alerts or texts. You can try a full day of detox or allow for only certain times when phones can be checked and games can be played on tablets. The pause from technology will be a welcome refresher.
