The festival — now in its ninth year — is a fundraiser to benefit the Volunteers in Medicine Clinic on Hilton Head. Roughly 65 percent of the clinic’s patients are Latino, and organizer of the festival, Latinos Unidos, wants to give back to the clinic. Last year’s event raised $37,737 for the clinic; over the years, Latinos Unidos has donated more than $118,000 — all raised at the festival.

shrimpfestThe first-ever Hilton Head Island Shrimp Festival will be held from 2-6 p.m. Sept. 22 on the lawn adjacent to the Liberty Oak in Harbour Town, at The Sea Pines Resort The event will feature a shrimp tasting contest, food, craft beer, live music, and a fun zone for children, including face painting and bounce houses. It is a ‘Southern Living Inspired’ event, because The Sea Pines Resort is partnering with Southern Living to produce this festival.

Songs and Beers“SONGS AND BEERS FOR HEROES” PAYS TRIBUTE TO FALLEN FIRST RESPONDERS

The second annual Songs and Beers for Heroes is a fundraiser to support the families of first responders killed in the line of duty

All money raised will benefit nonprofit group The 200 Club of the Coastal Empire, which offers financial support to the families of fallen first responders in Beaufort, Jasper and 18 other nearby counties.

“Got Art?”: A free public preview will be held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sept. 29-Oct. 2 at the Art League of Hilton Head Gallery. More than 100 “Got Art?” artworks will be on display. “Got Art?” is the Art League of Hilton Head’s annual fundraising benefi t and promises to make collectors out of art enthusiasts. The “Got Art?” event will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Art League of Hilton Head Gallery. Each $100 ticket admits two guests to an evening filled with art and entertainment, as well as a live drawing that guarantees the ticket holder one original piece of art. On Saturday, June 20, the Mitchelville Preservation Project will hold a 150th anniversary Juneteenth Celebration at Fish Haul Park on Beach City Road.

Also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, Juneteenth commemorates the issuance and first reading of General Order Number 3 by Union Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865. The holiday celebrates African-Americans’ freedom and achievements and encourages respect for all cultures. Juneteenth, a combination of June and 19th, serves as a historical milestone to remind Americans of the triumph of the human spirit over the cruelty of slavery.

The Broadway smash hit, Xanadu, is this summer’s Arts Center phenom, on stage from June 17-July 26. The musical follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from Mt. Olympus to Venice Beach, California in 1980 in a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time – the first roller disco! When she accidentally falls in love with him, much to her jealous sister-muses’ dismay, chaos and fun abound, skate wheels turn and disco balls twirl.
