Mayor Tom Peeples will recognize three Hilton Head Island residents at his quarterly “Citizens of the Month” dinner at 6 p.m. Monday, May 18, hosted by Brian Carmines at Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks, just off Squire Pope Road on Skull Creek. The Islanders honored are:
Thomas Curtis Barnwell III – Mr. Barnwell is a civic-minded person who contributes to his community in many ways. He serves on a committee for the Beaufort County School District, is president of the Stony/Squire Pope Property Owners Association and also serves on various committees throughout the community.
Carole Mottel – Carole founded the Operation 100% and 200% programs in 1994 at Hilton Head Island Elementary School. The mission of Operation 100% is to assure every child is reading at or above grade level by the end of first grade. The mission of Operation 200% is to assure every child is reading at or above grade level by the end of second grade. The program has endured because of its faithful volunteers mainly enlisted by Carole. Nearly 40 volunteers have devoted 1390 hours of one-on-one tutoring for 60 plus students during each school year.
She was also a member of the board of the Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra for two terms and chaired the Education/Outreach Committee. She is an amazing seamstress who designed and made costumes for numerous events. She organized and implemented the Ambassador Program for the International Piano Competition. She did the same for the Kids Corner for the Concours d’Elegance for the past three years. Carole is a great friend to education and music and anything that betters her community. She is a magnificent lady who shares her talents but walks the humble path.
Lindy Russell – In addition to co-founding the Hilton Head Heroes Organization, Lindy works tirelessly to support and promote the local Main Street Youth Theatre. She attends and supports various school and community activities and serves as a devoted and proud “ambassador” for the Town of Hilton Head Island.
