Mayor Tom Peeples will recognize three Hilton Head Island residents at his quarterly Citizens of the Month dinner Feb. 16 hosted by Brian Carmines of Hudson’s Seafood House on the Docks.

The islanders to be honored are:

Mark Baker, a landscape architect who has served on several town of Hilton Head Island committees and boards of local organizations.  He has served on the Hilton Head Bridge to the Beach Committee, town of Hilton Head Island Disaster Recovery Task Force, the Greater Island Committee which he chaired the Environment, Park & Recreation Subcommittee, the Hilton Head Island Rotary Club and he's a member of the board of directors of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry.

Nora Bess – Since taking the position as Hispanic Ministry Coordinator at Holy Family Catholic Church in 1999, Bess has  helped motivate people from all walks of life to make Hilton Head Island a better place. She does so by helping families with school registrations, translations, domestic violence education, recruiting and organizing professional volunteers to provide services free of charge, and educating Latino families concerning American culture, the English language and the legal system.

Elizabeth Hancock – In the fall of 2000, Hancock and a friend began Friends of the Children of Hilton Head, a local organization to benefit the MUSC Children’s Hospital and families it serves. Under her direction, the organization has raised thousands of dollars over the years and sponsored local lectures and health seminars. She is also a dedicated volunteer at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, working with youth-related endeavors and serving on the St. Luke’s Foundation. She recently won an award for the Plantation Garden through her service to a local Girl Scout troop and she can always be seen at Hilton Head Prep wearing many hats — from room mother to expert fundraiser.
