Embarq partners with the “Positive Place for Kids.”
Embarq is in the business of getting people connected, and last month the company did it in a special way. On Dec. 2, the Beaufort Boys & Girls Club saw its computer center reopen as the Embarq Technology and Innovation Center.
With 12 new computers installed at sleek operating stations, children have the opportunity to use the center for homework, email, games and other technology-based activities.
Carlotta Ungaro, president and CEO of the Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce, began the ribbon cutting ceremony by pointing out that the new center is an asset for improving the potential employability of Lowcountry youth.
This coincides with Education and Career Development, one of five core programs engaging young people in the club’s activities.
Jean Washington, executive director of the Lowcountry Boys & Girls Clubs of America, graciously acknowledged the club’s benefactors, especially Joe Mix, one of the club’s founding fathers.
After contacting the United Way and obtaining recommendations for community organizations with the greatest needs, the Beaufort club was one of three sites for national donations made by Embarq, and the first club in South Carolina to become a technology center recipient.
Not only were computers installed, but overhead projectors and a kid-sized conference table round out the center’s equipment and décor.
Randy Krause, Embarq public affairs manager for South Carolina, pointed out that the entire renovation was performed by locally-owned businesses and contracting companies for the painting, office furniture, and carpeting. For more information, call (843) 575-5430 or visit lcclubs.org.
