A sampling of Treat the Troops ‘Crumbs’ and their delicious homemade cookies. To date, over 1.2 million have been shipped thanks to the nationwide effort. When Hilton Head Island resident Jeanette Cram recalls watching news coverage of the Gulf War on September 11, 1990, she remembers then-president George H. W. Bush reading a poignant letter from a soldier written to his mother. The soldier asked her to send letters and cookies. Cram recalls looking at her husband and saying, “I can do that!” And, with that statement, her idea for “Treat the Troops” was conceived.

Since then, Cram’s “baby” has grown by leaps and bounds. Adding the Internet to the mix helped Treat the Troops become bigger than Cram could ever have dreamed. In fact, over 1.2 million cookies have been sent to deployed men and women overseas, and Cram is lovingly known, far and wide, as “The Cookie Lady.”

Cram said she would never be able to do what she does without the incredible group of volunteers, known as Crumbs, who live nationwide.

Treat the Troops founder Jeanette CramTreat the Troops’ treasurer Mary Ann Compher said, “It means a lot to know I’m doing something good for the men and women who are fighting for our freedom. They put their lives out there for us every day.”

A “Gathering of the Crumbs” is slated for October 24 - 25, at the Hilton Oceanfront Resort, and will allow these hard-working volunteers to come together and celebrate their common bond of sending love to our troops in practical ways. A chaplain will bless the event and a formerly deployed Marine, now a Crumb, will be the featured speaker.
