The Hilton Head Island Foundation Endowment Fund, a fund of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, and other designated funds, recently awarded $92,880 to local nonprofit organizations to strengthen and build programs.

A grant in the amount of $12,000 was awarded to the American Heart Association/Mid-Atlantic affiliate for the 2009 Go Red for Women conference on Hilton Head Island. The funding will be directed toward health screenings, which will be provided before and during the conference to at least 400 women.

A grant in the amount of $15,000 was awarded to the Church of the Cross Food Bank for its expansion. The food bank has gone from feeding approximately 85 families per week to more than 180 families per week. Food bank representatives anticipate needing to purchase at least $23,000 in additional food in 2009 to meet this growing need. Members of the church plan to contribute the remaining $8,000 needed for the purchase.

A grant in the amount of $20,000 was awarded to Citizens Opposed to Domestic Abuse (CODA) for a Safe at Home Housing Coordinator. CODA’s Safe at Home project is meant to enhance and expand assistance to CODA’s emergency shelter residents in locating and obtaining transitional housing by the end of their stay at the shelter. Currently, residential stay at CODA’s emergency shelter is limited to 60 days. In addition, CODA recently received funding from the Long Cove Club Community Endowment Fund of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry in the amount of $8,900 for rental subsidies for the program.

A challenge grant in the amount of $3,400 was awarded to the Hilton Head Choral Society  for the Summer 2009 Youth Choral Program at the Hilton Head Island Boys and Girls Club.

A grant in the amount of $27,480 was awarded to Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity for the Resource Development Initiative. Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity has plans for a building program that will result in the construction of 150 homes for families who live and/or work in the Hilton Head and Bluffton area. The Development Initiative will bring in much-needed resources to fund that expansion.

A grant in the amount of $15,000 was awarded to Room at the Inn of the Carolinas, Inc. for a Child Care Specialist to assist with child-care and parenting skills. The Bluffton-based maternity home for homeless women, 21 years old and younger, is currently full, with seven women and eight children residing in the home.

Founded in 1994, the mission of the community foundation is to strengthen community by connecting people, resources, and needs.  In the years since inception, the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry and affiliate Hilton Head Island Foundation have grown through additional gifts and investments and provided more than $26 million in grants to support local nonprofits. In addition to grantmaking, the community foundation focuses on assisting donors to meet their philanthropic goals and acts as a convener of resources to address community concerns. In July 2001, the community foundation expanded to serve residents in Beaufort, Colleton, Hampton, and Jasper counties. For more information, visit
