Mayor's column: How to find out if you (technically) live in Bluffton

Mayor Lisa SulkaMore often than not, when I speak to groups around town, I am asked the same question: “Do I live in the Town limits?”

It is amazing that so many Bluffton-area residents are confused about whether they live in the incorporated areas of Bluffton. The Town has gone through many annexations over the past 10 years, so it’s understandable that there is some confusion. We have “donut holes,” within our town and what may seem reasonable is not always the case.

The Town has been working on a new online service to assist the public in determining if an address is located within the Town of Bluffton boundaries. You can access this service by going to our website, www.townofbluffton.sc.gov and clicking on “GIS Maps” in the Quick Links section. After clicking “I agree” on the GIS disclaimer page, you will find the Town of Bluffton Address Locating System on the lower right section of the page.

This application will allow you to search by exact address, such as “20 Bridge Street” or by street name to view all addresses on a street. If the address or street you are searching is within the town boundaries, the results will be displayed in a table below the interactive map.

More facts:

  • Once an address is found, the user can access the address data by viewing the results in the table that appears below the map, or by hovering the mouse over the address point on the map.
  • The map displays Town address points, property lines, street names and the boundary lines.
  • If the address you’re searching for is not within the town limits, your search results will show a message stating the address was not found — along with a contact phone number if you believe this to be an error. It is important to verify with the addressing technician your legal address if it is not found in the town database.
