Mayor's Column: Bluffton has long believed in recycling

E-mail Print

Mayor Lisa SulkaThe town of Bluffton was involved in a recycling program before it was considered the right thing to do.

For as long as I can remember — and as long as I have lived in Bluffton (going on 18 years now) — our town has provided recycling containers to all residents, as well as the usual trash receptacles. We are one of the few municipalities in the area that provide this service to our residents on a weekly basis, and the only municipality in Beaufort County that does not charge extra fees for this service.

Currently, over 4,700 residences are served through our contract with Waste Management. We are very happy to continue this contract; in fact, our latest three-year contract has saved our taxpayers $175,000 annually. Part of the contract includes keeping track of our progress through regular usage reports, and next year we plan to implement a recycling education program, and hopefully begin talks about commercial recycling as well.

Trash Etiquette

  • Place cart at curbside by 7 a.m. on collection day
  • Maintain a 10-foot clearance around cart
  • Bag and securely tie trash in order to keep the cart clean and odor-free
  • Remember that only trash in a Waste Management cart will be removed
  • Recyclables do not have to be sorted. Items that can be recycled include flattened cardboard, newspapers, magazines, office paper, plastic, glass, aluminum, tin and steel bottles and containers, paperboard or cardboard containers, phone books and junk mail.
