Despite the economic downturn, the Town of Bluffton has been able to continue implementing the capital improvement program (CIP), approved by Town Council in 2005. The program has benefited from over $2.6 million in grant funding. Over the next year, 14 town projects are expected to complete their construction phase.
This calendar year the following projects will be completed:
- Sewer at Maiden Lane
- Building & Grounds relocation
- Wayfindng Signage
- New River Trailhead Parking & Access
- Streetscape, Phase 1: landscape, hardscape & lighting
- BIS Sewer, Phase 1
- Buckwalter Place Greenway Trail
- Oyster Factory Park, Phase 1: drainage, landing an road improvements
Additional projects to be completed by June 30, 2011 include:
- Law Enforcement Center
- 319 Pilot Project
- BIS Sewer, Phase 2
- BIS Sidewalks (next Phase)
- NSP Grant Affordable Housing
As part of the budget process, the planning commission reviews a proposed five-year outlook of projects and makes recommendations to Town Council. Town Council reviews the CIP projects and funding requirements. Only projects approved and funded by council proceed.
In addition to town projects, several other road construction activities are underway or will commence in the near future.
These include:
- Simmonsville widening: Hwy. 278 to Bluffton Pkwy.
- Hwy. 46 widening & roundabout: Hwy. 278 to Bluffton Village
- Buck Island/Simmonsville intersection improvements
- Simmonsville Road repaving
- SC Hwy. 278 widening
- Bluffton Parkway, Phase 5A
- Frontage Road at Plantation Business Park
Continuous resident and stakeholder participation is an important part of the project development, prioritization, and approval. I will be providing highlights as projects pro-gress.
