CENSUS 2010: MAKE SURE WE COUNT!

E-mail Print
mayorThe Census 2010 count is of the utmost importance to everyone living on Hilton Head Island.
The information compiled will be used to determine the number of representatives our community will be allocated at the federal, state and local levels.
The information will be used to determine the amount of government funding our community receives for such things as schools, employment services, housing assistance, roads, services for children and the elderly and many other things.
An accurate count helps local governments to better prepare for things like hurricane evacuations and where and when to build schools, hospitals, parks, libraries and other community facilities.
Approximately $400 billion in federal funds are allocated each year based on each state’s respective share of the United States population, as determined every 10 years by the census. If every resident on Hilton Head Island completes their census forms, then our community will receive a fair return of tax dollars.
The U.S. Census is a count of everyone residing in the United States, including citizens and non-citizens, and is required by the Constitution to take place every 10 years. You should have received your questionnaire by either U.S. mail or hand delivery by now. Please answer the 10 short questions and then mail the form back in the postage-paid envelope provided. The form takes about 10 minutes to complete. Please indicate whether your housing unit is rented or owned; the address of the residence; and the names, genders, ages, and races of all living in the household. The individual in whose name the housing unit is owned or rented should complete the form on behalf of every person living in the residence, including relatives and non-relatives.
By law, the Census Bureau cannot share responses with anyone, including other federal agencies and law enforcement entities. Households that do not respond may receive a replacement questionnaire in early or mid-April or may receive a visit from a census taker who will ask you the questions from the form.
What kind of assistance is available to help people complete the questionnaire? Questionnaire Assistance Centers will assist those unable to read or understand the questionnaire. If you need assistance, please contact the Charlotte Regional Census 2010 Office at 1-800-331-7360 or the local office in Beaufort at 843-982-5420 or visit www.2010census.gov for further information.
