Saltwater fishing licenses requiredYou now need a permit to catch saltwater fish from the shore under a new state law that went into effect in July.

As of July 1, permits are required for recreational fishing from beaches, banks, private dock, public piers and so forth, as well as for recreational shrimping and crabbing.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources says the new permitting will help it keep track of the amount of recreational fishing going on in the state and allow officials to better manage the waterways.

The permits cost $10 for state residents and can be purchased from the department’s Web site, www.dnr.sc.gov, by calling 866-714-3611, or by visiting DNR license sales agents across the state. Two-week permits can be purchased for $5 for residents and $11 for non-residents. Anglers on a licensed fishing boat or those under 16 are exempt. Permits are already required for freshwater fishing.
