Coligny Beach Park set to open

The renovations that hampered access to the town’s busiest beach park during early summer have wrapped up and the park is ready to welcome the public.

The overhaul of Coligny Beach Park began in February and town manager Steve Riley said all the final checklist items were being reviewed in mid-July in preparation for turning on the big fountain installed at the park.

The goal was to expand and open up the views to the ocean from the street to create a sense of arrival for visitors heading to the town’s main public beach. The $1.43 million project widened the entrance, installed landscaping and added changing rooms and bathrooms. The centerpiece of the entrance is a fountain large enough for children to play in, with jets that shoot 20 feet high. The park also includes 20 new security cameras.

The project turned out to be ill-timed, however. The town had hoped to wrap it up by Memorial Day weekend before the biggest summer crowds arrived. But delays pushed it back to early June, disrupting some businesses in the area, “You’re always going to have some impact because there’s not much downtime,” Riley said. “If we had started in September or October, it might have been a little less bad.”
