Shelter Cove mall gets more time

The town council of Hilton Head Island gave The Mall at Shelter Cove an extra year of time to build a movie theater, voting to approve a fiveyear timeline — one year more — to complete the project.

The mall, which has had financial struggles, is planning to add a 46,000-square-foot movie theater complex to help boost its bottom line. The mall’s owner, Walt Petrie, wants to build the theater theater quickly but is having challenges in securing loans in the current economy.

Local architects and construction workers will be given preference when the mall selects workers to build the theater. Petrie has said he is willing to spend $10 million to build the theater and upgrade common areas of the mall. He feels the theater would help attract restaurants to the mall, which are sorely needed.
