Company aims to recycle most phone books ever for community’s benefit

Hilton Head Island area residents can once again conveniently recycle their out-of-date yellow and white page directories. Now in its 17th year, the annual Hargray Recycle Campaign encourages residents and businesses to recycle their directories by raising awareness about the benefits of recycling and providing convenient recycling centers.

The 17th annual Hargray Recycle Campaign will run through April 15; new directories are being delivered to Hilton Head Island, Hardeeville and Bluffton. The company hopes to break its own record by recycling 70 tons of directories.

“Every year we strive to recycle more phone books than the previous year,” said Hargray Marketing Director Eddie Andrews. “Hargray takes our commitment to our communities very seriously and part of that commitment is to protect this beautiful area we live in. We accomplish that by recycling any phone book we can get our hands on.  The useful life of a phone book doesn’t need to end after one year. Recycled phone books can be turned into insulation, toilet paper, cereal boxes, roofing shingles and new phone books.”

During the Hargray Recycle Campaign, phone books can be recycled at the Hargray Retail Stores on Hilton Head Island (856 William Hilton Pkwy.) and in Bluffton (5 Buck Island Road). During and after the campaign, directories can also be recycled at the Dillon Road Recycle Center on Hilton Head Island, the Simmonsville Road Recycle Center and Gibbet Road Recycle Center in Bluffton, as well as the Public Works Building (21 Martin St.) in Hardeeville.

Hargray’s ambitious effort is once again made more attainable through several partnerships, including Data Publishing, Waste Pro, McDonald’s and Green Tree Apparel. These companies have donated their goods or services because of their commitment to the environment and green initiatives.

As in years past, Hargray has involved the children of the community and is working with five local schools. Students from Hilton Head International Baccalaureate, Hilton Head School Creative Arts, Hilton Head Middle School, Bluffton Elementary and Okatie Elementary will challenge each other to recycle the most phone books. The class at each school that recycles the most phone books will receive special recognition from Hargray. On top of that, students in the class that recycles the most phone books overall will receive a free meal from McDonald’s. The student who personally recycles the most phone books will receive a free T-shirt from Green Tree Apparel.

“We involve the students because their enthusiasm for this project is infectious and they truly understand the benefits of recycling these directories," said Andrews. "The annual Hargray Recycle Campaign is the success it is because of the students’ involvement.”
