Officials with the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control are considering cutting the number of surprise restaurant inspections from two to one per year as part of an effort to cut about $1.5 million from the budget. Inspectors would rely more on tips from diners if inspections are reduced, a spokesman said.
DHEC also is considering stopping inspections of temporary food vendors at places like fairs.
