We hope that the business community looks at projects like this and considers revitalizing its structures and sites to keep up with the times.Mayor Tom Peeples

In 2004, Town Council approved the Bridge to the Beach-1 Redevelopment Projects. Included in the plans was the redevelopment of the existing Coligny Beach Park. Coligny Beach Park currently consists of bathroom facilities, a Facilities Management office, a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Department office, a dropoff area, benches, a beach shower, and boardwalk access to the beach. The park also provides a separate access point for Shore Beach Services, removed from the designed pedestrian access.

The Coligny Redevelopment Project is under construction with a five-month construction deadline. The project will consolidate the paths of access for vehicles and pedestrians and opening up views to the ocean by locating facilities and amenities outside the main line of sight.

In addition to retaining the existing bathroom provision, we will provide changing areas, additional showers, decks, a covered picnic facility, improved boardwalks to the beach, interactive fountains, and elevated, shaded seating areas to provide a destination-type amenity for beachgoers.

As an element of improving our overall beach parking in the Coligny area, the Redevelopment Plan proposes removing the parking spaces in the Northwest sector of the park, and providing improved and expanded pedestrian walkways. The parking spaces to the Northeast will become dedicated handicap spaces.

We hope that the business community looks at projects like this and considers revitalizing its structures and sites to keep up with the times.

In making all of the improvements of the park in this redevelopment effort, the town will be increasing and re-establishing the vegetative buffer with the adjacent properties. The construction should be completed by early this summer.

When the project is completed, council hopes you find that the park has a freshness about it. Coligny Park represents council’s commitment to revitalizing an old amenity by making improvements reflecting the world-class expectations residents and visitors have for our facilities. We hope that the business community looks at projects like this and considers revitalizing its structures and sites to keep up with the times. Council is in the process of facilitating redevelopment and revitalization for our residents by considering changes to our Land Management Ordinance (LMO).

Public meetings will be held as the town updates its Comprehensive Plan and considers LMO changes in the near future.
