A man who was seen wandering around Spanish Wells Plantation naked was arrested by deputies of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office this afternoon, after reportedly breaking into a home on Brams Point Road.
At approximately 10:45 a.m. today, Sheriff’s deputies responded to Spanish Wells Plantation after receiving a call about a man wearing nothing but a single sock walking down the street.
Upon arrival, deputies learned that the suspect had entered the residence at 29 Brams Point Road. A few moments later, deputies talked with Jarrett Borton, 22, whose parents own the home. Borton said that earlier that morning, he had been home alone when the suspect had come to the house. Borton identified the suspect as a former high school classmate, 22-year-old Leandre Nicholson.
Borton said that Nicholson entered the home through a back door and appeared disoriented, asking for help and mumbling incoherently. Borton tried to get Nicholson to leave, but he became increasingly agitated. Nicholson grabbed a nearby bottle and smashed it, cutting his hand in the process. A brief struggle ensued between Borton and Nicholson, as Borton attempted to get Nicholson out of the house.
Borton then fled the residence, running out to his car to get help. Nicholson followed Borton out, pulling up a landscape light from the driveway and throwing it at Borton’s car as Borton drove away.
At some point following Borton’s departure, Nicholson removed his clothing and began wandering around the neighborhood before returning to and re-entering the Borton home, the sheriff's report said.
Members of the K-9 Team, SWAT Team, and Negotiations Team responded to the home and made contact with Nicholson, who was still inside. After failed attempts to get Nicholson to leave the residence on his own accord, SWAT Team members deployed a less-than-lethal foam projectile at Nicholson. He was then successfully subdued and taken into custody.
Borton was uninjured during the initial incident. Nicholson was transported to Hilton Head Regional Healthcare for treatment and evaluation. Upon release, he will be taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center where he will face charges of first-degree burglary and assault and battery. Additional charges of malicious injury to property and indecent exposure are also pending.
