Why target local businesses first for purchases and contracts?
Because the dollars spent in local businesses are invested back into your community. As the holiday shopping season begins, everyone can benefit from a drive to keep dollars close to home.
During this year’s State of the Region, Beaufort County Council Chairman Weston Newton emphasized to the business community how important it is to invest in the local economy during challenging times.
This year, the chamber will once again partner with The Island Packet newspaper, as well as with Monthly Media Group, to encourage businesses and consumers to “Shop Local” this holiday season. Members can join the campaign by displaying a poster or “Shop Local” sticker, as well as making the commitment to spend their dollars at other member establishments.
Small, locally-owned businesses pack a big punch when working together.
The small business community is our nation’s largest source of jobs. Local business owners have more invested in the community and the area’s future. Nonprofits benefit from locally owned businesses at a rate of 350 percent more than national donors.
“Our community leaders are on target with a push to shop local,” said chamber President & CEO Bill Miles. “...we wanted to encourage residents to shop local this holiday season and beyond.”

Editor’s note: Monthly Media Group also encourages readers to support local businesses during the holidays, as well as year round, by taking advantage of Monthly’ s great M Specials courtesy fine local vendors (see p. 22).
