Hilton Head Island’s Children’s Center was founded more than four decades ago to offer low-cost childcare to the island’s working class residents.
This summer, that dream got a new home: The center moved into its newly constructed 20,000-square-foot home on Nature’s Way abutting Jarvis Creek Park, culminating a multi-year fundraising campaign that raised $3.5 million for construction.
This year, 167 children will use the new building, but the facility can hold much more, said David Ames, chairman of the center’s board.
In addition to having more classroom space, the new center has a multipurpose room that acts like a small gymnasium. When students saw it for the first time in July, they were awed.
The room has a state-certified commercial kitchen attached and will be used for exercises, graduations, parent dinners and other events.
Each classroom has been specifically designed for the age group it will be accommodating, Ames said.
The old center building now becomes property of the Town of Hilton Head, which will eventually turn into a traffic circle as part of the Mathews Drive overhaul.
