The Beaufort County School District in May named its 2010 teachers of the year for each school in the county. The winners are selected by their peers and will go on to compete for the overall teacher of the year award for the whole school district.
“This is a terrific opportunity to celebrate the unique gifts of our best of the best teacher leaders,” district superintendent Valerie Truesdale said in a press release. “In these economic times … we want to be sure our teachers know how much we appreciate their willingness to do more with less resources.”
The winners in southern Beaufort County are: Karen Perdue, Hilton Head International Baccalaureate Elementary School; Deborah Holland, Hilton Head Island High School; Denise Ondishko, Hilton Head Island Early Childhood; Mary Rizzi, Hilton Head Island Middle School; Jorja Scott, Okatie Elementary School; Elise Kozier, Bluffton Elementary School; Tennille Scheriff, Hilton Head Island School for the Creative Arts; Lindsey Widener Skirtich, Bluffton High School; Dawn Sumner, H.E. McCracken Middle School; Elizabeth Burke, M.C. Riley Elementary School; and Erin Berglind, Red Cedar Elementary School.
