Paul Smith has been named the chairman of the Hilton Head Island Celebrity Golf Foundation, the group announced in February. Smith is general manager of Data Publishing Inc., which prints telephone and business directories.
The tournament has been dealing with financial woes over the past year as it copes with the recession and a lack of corporate sponsors. It reorganized the structure of the event last year to reduce the cost for players and stay afloat. In announcing Smith's appointment, the tournament said it is developing new strategies to reorganize the tournament and that its Council of Trustees is "working on evaluating every aspect of the tournament from sponsorships to the celebrity roster." Full details on the 2010 tournament, scheduled for Sept. 3-5, were expected by late February.
“We are very excited about our 30th anniversary. We will have new and affordable opportunities for locals to participate in the activities of the weekend," Smith said in a press release. “We have found that those who have provided the financial support to many of the children’s charities have been hesitant to contribute in recent years. We feel it is our responsibility to use this tournament as a venue to raise as much money as possible for our community."
