The town has selected the Art League of Hilton Head Island as the nonprofit group that will take the new community space at The Mall at Shelter Cove.
The setting aside of a space dedicated to a community organization was a key provision in the agreement between the town and mall owner Petrie Ross Ventures to allow the construction of a stadium-seating movie theater. The owners have argued that the construction of the theater — which would be the first of its kind the island — is critical to the survival of the mall, which has seen an exodus of stores and shoppers in recent years.
The art league plans to move its gallery from its Pineland Mall location. It also plans to hold art academy classes there to show off the kinds of things the league does, as well as future exhibits and classes.
The league offers art classes taught by local artists, venues for members to display their work, an art scholarship and a national juried art exhibition every May that brings artists from around the country to the island.
Under the agreement between the town and the mall, the league will be able to rent 4,500-square-foot space formerly occupied by a Foot Locker for $1 a year for up to 20 years.
