Town searching for nonprofit tenant at Mall at Shelter Cove

Hilton Head has begun its search for a nonprofit organization to fill a space at the Mall at Shelter Cove, a key part of the major mall expansion deal that includes a movie theater. Applications for the spot were due by Sept. 16 and the selected group will be able to lease the space for $1 a year for up to 20 years.

The town required the space for a community nonprofit group as part of the negotiations to let mall owners Petrie Ross Ventures go forward with a plan to build the island’s first stadium-seating theater. The owners say building the theater is crucial to the survival of the mall.

The nonprofit group will move into a 4,500-square-foot space formerly occupied by Foot Locker. The town will be selecting an organization based on a series of criteria: community benefit, mall compatibility, need for community space, organizational need and financial capabilities.

The town is expected to make recommendations on a group by the end of September, and Town Council is scheduled to take up the issue in October.
