Lots of students returning to school in August had a few less new-school-year jitters to worry about, at least when it comes to what to wear. Students in all county middle and elementary schools are now required to wear uniforms as of the first day of school on Aug. 17. The colors vary by each school, but mostly they limit students to solid-colored polo shirts and pants that are either khaki or black, according to the school district.
A uniform policy for high school students will go into effect for the 2010-2011 school year. Bluffton High School enacted a looser version of the dress code starting this school year before enforcing the stricter districtwide policy next year that will affect all 19,000 students in the county’s 28 schools.
Another new addition this school year is SchoolMessenger, an automated communication system the district installed that allows principals and school officials to share weather-related news and emergency information or to let parents know when their child is absent. The system can send out e-mail, text or voice messages in both English and Spanish. The district says the system will soon be able to create a database and provide parents with online access to student attendance, grades and classroom assignments.
