Longtime Kentucky resident and former pharmacist Tony Chase is opening a new rum company on Daufuskie Island. Daufuskie Island Rum Company will operate out of a 2,000-square-foot micro distillery starting early next year. The building features a large porch overlooking a pond and will invite customers to sip the locally produced spirit in rocking chairs. Chase, 53, purchased a retirement home on the bridgeless island in 2012 but wasn’t ready to stop working.
After considering making bourbon, he decided to produce a more tropical liquor instead. He isn’t banking on making a huge profit. In fact, he hopes this new venture can just break even. The company already has agreements with distributors in both South Carolina and Georgia and has drawn the interest of several local bars and restaurants.
