The town of Bluffton has hired a new town manager.

The Town Council selected Anthony W. Barrett of Fredricksburg, Va., for the position, the town announced. Barrett’s last local government job was as county administrator for Spotsylvania County, Va., where he served from 2001 to 2003. He most recently worked in the private sector in property acquisition and development for Silver Development Companies of Fredricksburg. He begins work in Bluffton on Sept. 1.

Former town manager Bill Workman announced in March that he wanted to leave the post July 10. Workman was hired three years ago to replace former town manager Josh Martin. A former mayor of Greenville, Workman oversaw operations during a crucial period of growth for Bluffton, including annexations, commercial development along Buckwalter Parkway and development of comprehensive stormwater protections for the May River. Bluffton’s Town Council received 400 applications from across the country. The finalists included one in-house candidate: Marc Orlando, assistant town manager for growth management.
