A fourth Ulmer family farm parcel in greater Blufton was protected from development recently when Beaufort County and the Town of Hilton Head Island closed on the purchase of a conservation easement on the property.

Te 257-acre tract sits adjacent to three other parcels that were previously protected by a partnership between the county and the town through the Beaufort County Rural and Critical Land Preservation Program. Tis brings the total number of preserved Ulmer farm sites to more than 900 acres.

Te land is owned by lifelong Blufton residents, Allen Ulmer, C.A.Ulmer and Hugh Ulmer.

Under the agreement, the family may subdivide the property into 25 smaller farm tracts, but the land cannot be developed.

Te benefts of the easement include protection of the nearby May River from surface water runof, alleviation of trafc congestion at the U.S. 278/Moss Creek intersection and protection of the environment. It also helps the county save money by removing the option for developing a dense mixed residential community on the site. Tis eliminates the potential need for additional roadways, public services and schools.
