Q: The recently released master plan for the Hilton Head Island Airport outlined several options for runway lengthening. In your view, is it necessary to expand the facilities in order for the airport to be viable? If so, what should the limits of such expansion be?
A: The FAA & the Firm of Talbert & Bright have recommended a runway extension in order to maintain commercial service their expert advice needs to be heeded, if service is to continue in the not too distant future.

Q: Do you support offshore drilling along the South Carolina coast?
A: Oil drilling off the South Carolina coast is not necessary.  There are many other alternatives that make more sense.

Q: Some beachfront property owners have complained that trees block their views, causing vacationers to complain about paying a premium for ocean views that are partially obscured. Would you support a process that would allow them to selectively cut trees?
A: Trees are an important factor for the island’s natural landscape.  Keeping trees trimmed so ocean views can be maintained is fine.  Destroying trees is not.

Q: Are you in favor of instituting a 1% sales tax to be used by the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce for tourism marketing?
A: I have argued against the Chamber of Commerce’s 1% Sales tax.  This is a regressive tax that hurts low and middle income residents the most.  Let’s put our energies behind the state tax reform effort.

Q: What should the town’s role be in encouraging people to recycle?
A: Recycling is good stewardship of our environment.  Residents should have the opportunity to do this themselves or avail themselves of a commercial service.  If an island wide commercial service is selected the town should assure that the selection process was competitive,  that  cost is improved and excellent service is assured.
