baseballUSCB’s Sand Shark baseball team is gearing up for their debut on the diamond Saturday, taking on the Southern Wesleyan Warriors in a double header on the Shark Field at the Richard Gray Baseball Complex in Hardeeville.

Former major leaguer Rick Sofield serves as head coach for the 44 young men making up the inaugural team.

Players come from states as far away as Utah, Vermont and Texas.

The Sand Sharks are members of the NAIA and Sun Conference. Fifty-five games are scheduled this season, with 21 of those being home games. The entire season’s schedule can be found at uscbathletics.com/schedules.asp?path=baseball

“This baseball game is incredibly important, not only to Sand Shark Athletics, but to the university as a whole," said Jane Upshaw, USCB chancellor. "It is symbolic of our arrival as a full-service, four-year institution, which has always been our ultimate goal. Strong athletics, like this baseball program, solidifies our position in the region we serve and plays a significant role in our becoming a destination school.”

Professional announcer Guy Malool is the voice of the Sand Sharks. Malool is no stranger to college athletics – over the years, he’s announced for Clemson, USC, Furman and Presbyterian College. He's also been affiliated with The Greenville Drive and was honored as “The Voice” of the Hilton Head Baseball Association, Hilton Head High School Seahawks and many other high school and youth athletic programs in the Lowcountry. He's also a state certified baseball umpire.

Concessions will be available at the park for purchase during the game, along with Sand Shark items and booster club memberships. While bleacher seating is available, fans are welcome to bring chairs.
