“I have heard it said that an inoculation to the sights and smells of the Carolina Lowcountry is an almost irreversible antidote to the charms of other landscapes, other alien geographies. You can be moved profoundly by other vistas, by other oceans, by soaring mountain ranges, but you can never be seduced.”
Pat Conroy seduces us with his language and inspires us to share with you, dear reader, a few of the sensuous, romantic spots in the Lowcountry to take your partner over these summer days and nights.
- First, take a romantic walk on the beach at sunset. Any of the beaches on Hilton Head will do, but we like Burkes Beach for its quieter vista. Here’s a hint, however. There’s a small beach on St. Helena called Lands End. It’s perfect. Take U.S. 21 toward Hunting Island, turn right at the Penn Center, and follow the signs for Fremont and Lands End. But don’t tell anyone!
- A sunset sail on the Schooner Welcome gives you and your loved one a chance to relax and enjoy the soft breezes of a Lowcountry evening. It sets sail from Shelter Cove Marina and cruises through Broad Creek and out into Calibogue Sound. Visit www.schoonerwelcome.com for more information.
- The Inn at Palmetto Bluff is situated on the banks of the May River, one of the most beautiful spots in the Lowcountry. The cuisine is amazing and the resort is incredibly luxurious. Book a weekend and enjoy a private porch bath soak for two. Visit www.palmettobluffresort.com.
- Who doesn’t love a massage? How about a massage for two? There are several local spas that offer this wonderfully romantic experience, but one of our favorites is FACES, which describes this delicious service like so: “The ultimate in romance, our orchestrated couples massage is sure to be a harmonious experience for you and your partner. Including a Spa Journey AromaBath for two.” Mmmm. Call 785-3075.
- How about indulging in a private dinner for two at one of the many amazing restaurants in the area with a water view? The Old Fort Pub, for instance, has a private dining room at the top of the restaurant with some of the most spectacular views on Hilton Head Island. Another great restaurant spot is the Boathouse II on Skull Creek. It has an outdoor bar on the water and Adirondack chairs to sit and enjoy a cocktail (or two).
- Want to go a little, shall we say, cheaper? Take a walk at the Audubon Newhall Preserve off Palmetto Bay Road, a beautiful and quiet spot for a little hand-holding and sweet talk.
- Who would have thought a little cemetery and a burnt-out church could be so romantic? Believe it or not, the Old Sheldon Church in Yemassee is a truly perfect spot for a picnic. It is the picture of classic simplicity with its canopy of old oaks and Spanish moss. It really is quiet and lovely. Take U.S. 21 north and turn left on Sheldon Church Road. Go about two miles and the church is on the right.
- Finally, who can resist the romance of a horse-drawn carriage ride in historic Beaufort? Call Carolina Buggy Tours at 524-2900 or Southern Rose Buggy Tours at 525-1300.
No matter what you activity you choose, just remember that the most important thing is the person you’re with.
