0510_plasticsurgeryWe’ve all heard of breast implants, nose jobs, liposuction and facelifts. But there are also many other plastic surgery procedures, some which may surprise you. Here are five of them:

Eyebrow/eyelash transplants
There are several reasons people get these transplants, including overplucking, or due to disease, burns or other physical trauma, In the procedure, the hair is extracted one follicle at a time from either the patient’s scalp or leg. The hair is transplanted one or two hairs at a time.

Toe shortening
Toe shortening shortens the length of the toes by removing portions of the bones. Many women so that their feet fit into trendy shoes, or their toes hang over the edge of their shoes. After toe shortening, chances are your feet will remain swollen for almost six months, if not longer, because it is very hard for feet to drain fluid.

Calf implants
Calf implants bring cosmetic fullness in the lower leg and can help those men and women who, even after extensive muscular development, can’t achieve the calf muscle toning they desire. Calf implants are best suited for lower leg sculpting, and also can correct muscle imbalance as a result of both physical and congenital defects

Eyelid surgery
Eyelid surgery, which is called blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that reduces bagginess from lower eyelids and removes excess skin from the upper eyelids. The procedure involves the removal of excess skin, muscle and underlying fatty tissue. While it is primarily a cosmetic procedure, blepharoplasty is also an effective method for improving sight in older patients whose sagging upper eyelids obstruct their vision.

Hymen reconstruction
For the girl who has everything. Hymen repair, also known as a hymenoplasty, is a surgical procedure that restores a woman's hymen or creates a hymen where one was nonexistent. The hymen, a tissue membrane, partially covers or surrounds the vaginal opening as part of the vulva (external genitalia). In some cultures and societies, it is believed that the existence of an intact hymen is proof of a woman's virginity.

Did you know?

The first recorded “nose job” is found in ancient Indian Sanskrit texts (600 BC). Physicians would reconstruct noses by cutting skin from either the cheek or forehead, twisting the skin side out over a leaf of the appropriate size, and sewing the skin into place. Two polished wooden tubes would be inserted into the nostrils to keep the air passage open during healing.

Do your homework

If you are interested in plastic surgery, there are many fine doctors in the local area. Make sure to get the answers to these questions:

  • Is the surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?
  • Is the surgeon credentialed to perform your procedure at any local hospitals?
  • Can the surgeon provide examples of past work and put you in contact with former patients, excluding office staff?
  • Has the surgeon clearly articulated risk factors and expected results?
