Gift of Health Fair set for Dec. 6.

Blood pressure checks are free at the Gift of Health Fair. The Gift of Health Fair, like many Rotarian projects started with a simple idea. One summer day in 2005, two Rotarians, Ed Dowaschinski and Mike Walsh, sat chatting about ways in which the Hilton Head Sunset Rotary Club could make a positive impact within the community.

Walsh, who is the executive director of Mental Health America-Beaufort/Jasper, threw out the idea that MHABJ wanted to move in the direction of fostering health as opposed to focusing on illness. The conversation soon turned to ways in which both organizations could cooperate to spread this kind of positive message in our own community.

What better way, they posited, than to sponsor a Health Fair in which health providers from all disciplines came together in the spirit of fostering overall community health? In this way, members of our community would get access to high quality health-related information across disciplines.

From its modest beginnings, the Gift of Health Fair has grown into a cornerstone community event. Since that first year, the Sunset Rotary Club has sought and gained District Simplified Grant Funds from Rotary District 7770 to support this event in each of the last three years.

The Mall at Shelter Cove continues to provide space for the event and Mental Health America Beaufort-Jasper continues to work closely with the Hilton Head Sunset Rotary Club to sponsor and to organize the event.

District Simplified Grant Funds will be used to provide every screening service at absolutely no cost to attendees.Mental Health America Beaufort/Jasper
