EDITOR'S LETTER

Joy of Motherhood

I am somewhat notorious for waiting until the 11th hour to complete my Letter from the Editor. This is typically due to the fact that, while I'm thinking about it long before deadline, I like to see the issue come together before I get my final thoughts down in print.

Last month, while we were on deadline with our May Mother's Day issue, my 9-year-old son fell ill and I wound up typing up my letter at his hospital bedside. Coincidentally, 15 years ago, my own mother spent Mother's Day at my hospital bedside when I underwent brain tumor surgery.

I would've refrained from reference to my milemarker anniversary, but such
experiences truly put life in unique perspective and show us what we, and those prominent in our lives, are made of. I would be remiss not to acknowledge my Monthly 'family' for its immense support during our hectic production week and the amazing staff and service at Hilton Head Hospital -- thank God for Wi-Fi.

I love what I do and love being a mom -- even the most trying challenges are overshadowed by the positive experiences. This month, we are proud to feature a few local moms who also appreciate the joy of motherhood, and some great gift ideas, beginning on page 62.

My love for gourmet cooking (and dining!) is also no secret. My publisher and I - ever passionate foodies and always joking about turning Monthly into a culinary publication - are very excited to feature the Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry's Cooks & Books event, which combines exciting chef competition and talented authors for a great cause. Learn more on page 93.

Managing editor Barry Kaufman, who has been with me for nearly five years, is moving on to pursue other endeavors. His talents and vibrant personality will be sorely missed and we wish him all the best. Kate Hanzalik, recently relocated to Bluffton from New York and also a foodie, has assumed his position - tough shoes to fill. With her impressive editing background - and the skills she has demonstrated during production week's 'on-the-job' training, I am certain she will make a fine addition and ask you to join me in welcoming her to the Monthly team.

Happy Mother's Day to my mom and all our Monthly readers.

God bless,

Blanche T. Sullivan, Editor-in-Chief
