Corks Wine Bar & Boutique

Cosmopolitan and Casual

Corks Wine Bar & BoutiqueIt’s the exhilarating first anniversary celebration of Corks Wine Bar & Boutique in the Calhoun Street Promenade and owners Josh Luman and Gabby Ferrell survey the lively bistro they’ve created with great satisfaction.

“We set out to create a warm, inviting atmosphere where patrons of all ages could sample some wines, dine on a delicious casual meal and enjoy meeting friends in a warm, friendly environment. We think we’ve accomplished nearly all our goals.”

Why do patrons from Hampton Lakes, Palmetto Bluff, Colleton Plantation and Sun City compare this Bluffton bar and boutique to places they’ve known and loved in cities like New York or Boston?

Maybe it’s the subdued lighting, the weathered, historic brick walls and the Brazilian granite bar top that all evoke memories of times past. Or is it the delicious “big” small plates filled with smoked salmon pizza or fresh local May River oysters or maybe the bruschetta with tomatoes, basil and sweet onions, prepared by talented chef, Abi Hernandez?

Many customers have discovered the “uncorked flights” with prices ranging from $10 to $15, allowing them to taste three wines to compare and contrast wines suited to their own individual palates.

Here is the perfect opportunity to “sip and sample” since there are more than 20 wines in the “blonde” category ( pinot grigios, sauvignon blancs, chardonnays) and more than 25 selections in the “red heads” list (merlots, shiraz, pinot noirs).

It’s not surprising to find such eclectic choices — wines from Germany, Italy, France, Australia, California, Washington — once you learn about Josh Luman’s upbringing.

“I was lucky to have had the opportunity to travel the world when I was just a youngster,” he said. “My father worked on oil rigs around the world and our family lived in Australia, Scotland, Malaysia. In each place my mom and dad would encourage us to try the local food and beverages. It was a wonderful experience to taste the best in restaurants and pubs around the world. I try to bring that cosmopolitan touch, in a small way, to our patrons here in Bluffton.”

Josh and Gabby are proud of their support of local charities and local merchants.

“We get our oysters from The Bluffton Oyster Co. and whenever possible we shop local farmers markets for the very freshest produce,” he said. “Our checkbook is open to support local fund-raising efforts, especially where we know people might be going without a meal. Generally, we’ll donate a fine bottle of wine to clubs and organizations raising monies for local charities.”

Both Josh and Gabby have settled in to a very full, active life in Bluffton after many years of an Ohio upbringing. They met years ago as students at Marietta High School in Marietta, Ohio.

“Gabby is gorgeous, raven haired, beautiful, talented, the love of my life,” Luman said. “We will marry one day. We’re partners in Corks Wine Bar & Boutique and I expect us to be partners in life.”
