The Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce will host an economic briefing "Bottom Line 09: Succeeding in a Challenging Economy" from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, April 2 at the Crowne Plaza Resort.
Martin Regalia, vice president of economic and tax policy and chief economist with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, will present the latest information on the economy and the economic stimulus package.
"The stimulus package did not meet the president's goal of being targeted, timely and temporary," Regalia said. "But its huge size should help the economy recover." Regalia said that there are several tax provisions for small businesses included in the national stimulus. He will review these programs and how business will benefit.
Regalia also served as a principal analyst in the Fiscal Analysis Division at the Congressional Budget Office, as an economist for the board of governors of the Federal Reserve System in both the Banking and Capital Markets Sections, and as a financial economist for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. He notes the importance of correcting the financial system.
"The administration has to outline the details on how it is addressing the continuing problems in the banking system," he said.
Rebecca Gunnlaugsson, director for the Division of Research for the South Carolina Department of Commerce, will address the current economic outlook for our state. Gunnlaugsson has a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Michigan and works in the state's efforts to recruit new businesses and help existing businesses grow.
"South Carolina has established an environment that will help companies be more competitive," she said. "We have aggressive tort reform, workers' comp reform and tax incentives to name a few resources."
