LaveryThe Rotary Club of Bluffton has named Karen Lavery their Rotarian of the Year. Lavery chaired the Salvation Army Christmas bell-ringing project and the largest group’s largest event, the Bluffton Village Festival.

The Zonta Club of Hilton Head Island has named Susan Hicks as its 2009-2010 Woman of Achievement. The award recognizes one of the club’s members for outstanding service to the club and the community.

David Harshman and Thom Schultz have formed Beaufort Cardiology, located in Suite 300 of the Beaufort Medical Plaza, next to Beaufort Memorial Hospital; they are employed by Roper St. Francis Health Care System in Charleston. Stuart Smalheiser, MD has joined and is employed by Lowcountry Medical Group.

The Technical College of the Lowcountry Foundation recently received an $18,000 donation from the Hilton Head Hospitality Auxiliary for scholarships to benefit second-year health science students who reside in southern Beaufort County. Kathleen BatesonKathleen Bateson, president and CEO of the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, has been appointed first vice president for the South Carolina Arts Alliance, a statewide assembly of arts organizations, educators, administrators and businesses that provides advocacy and leadership development.

Bateson has been with the Arts Center for 12 years. Under her guidance, the non-profit received the governor’s 2006 Elizabeth O’Neill Verner Award for top arts organization in South Carolina.

Attorney Dale Akins of Bluffton has been given the prestigious AV Preeminent rating from Martindale-Hubbell, the facilitator of a peer review rating process. Ratings reflect the anonymous opinions of members of the bar and the judiciary.

Hilton Head Hospital has received recognition from the American Association of Respiratory Care. The Association’s Quality Respiratory Care Recognition goes to hospitals who meet strict safety and quality standards.

The Hilton Head Island Foundation Endowment Fund, a fund of the Community Foundation of the Lowcountry, and other designated funds, recently awarded $135,900 to the following organizations: The Deep Well Project, Hilton Head Island Safe Harbour, the Mental Health Association of Beaufort and Jasper Counties and the SCDNR Waddell Mariculture Program.

Beaufort Memorial Hospital Breast Care Coordinator Ronda O’Connell, RN, BSN, MSA, recently passed the Certified Breast Care Nurse (CBCN(r)) examination. O’Connell is the hospital’s first and only Breast Care Coordinator.
