Jim CollettCollett Named Rotarian of the Year

The Hilton Head Island Rotary bestowed the title Rotarian of the Year for 2010 to member Jim Collett. Collett served as fundraising chair, creating new and innovative ways to raise money for the club’s many beneficiaries and increasing dollars previously raised through similar fundraisers.

Students complete first home buyer/financial literacy class

Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry graduated its first homebuyer/financial literacy education class on Thursday, July 8. Graduates are shown here with Nancy Williams, executive director, LVL, and Tray Hunter, marketing representative, Palmetto Electric Cooperative. The class met for five weeks and covered topics such as budgeting; credit; applying for a mortgage loan, and home buying.

Altamirano named Outstanding Employee of the Year

Corina Altamirano, program associate and bi-lingual program associate for Literacy Volunteers of the Lowcountry, was named Outstanding Employee of the Year at the 2010 Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting and Civitas Awards on June 24, 2010. The award recognizes an individual who provides excellent customer service, who is a good team player and who raises the bar in his/her workplace by contributing new ideas that better the company.

Glen CarriganCarrigan takes third place in strong man competition

Glen Carrigan, owner of Progressive Health and Fitness on Hilton Head Island, walked away with a third place win in the Strong Man Competition held in Granville, Ohio, on May 22. The competition was a first for Carrigan, who is pleased with his performance and proud of the accomplishment.

Coastal Kingdom earns four national Telly Awards

Coastal Kingdom, an original television series produced by Beaufort County and the Lowcountry Institute, has earned four national Telly Awards. The series features the Lowcountry environment and wildlife. Coastal Kingdom received a first place for videography and three second-place awards for the environmental, nature, and people’s choice categories. The county channel is streamed on the home page of the county website, bcgov.net and broadcast on Charter Cable channel 20, Comcast Cable channel 2, Hargray Cable channel 252, Time Warner Cable HHI channel 66 and Time Warner Cable Sun City channel 63.
