With a new president in ofce, we have entered a new era in American history. We already have heard the themes of the new Administration – “Personal Responsibility,” “Restore Hope” and working towards “Positive Change.” Whether these words take root and create positive momentum is left to be answered by all of us.
Te Economy is the No. 1 topic. Te fact that we are in the deepest recession of our lifetime is worrisome and has taken center stage in our daily lives. We have already witnessed that the government is prepared to do its part, and the new administration will continue to take every measure it can pass through Congress to help the economy.
But no President, regardless of how popular he might be, can do the job alone. It is now our turn to seize the moment and do our part and make it happen for us personally!
Clearly, this is not the time for the age of “ME” but rather the new age of “US.” But that said, if individuals can make it happen for them and you multiply this by hundreds of millions, we as a Nation will have collectively reversed our fortunes and turned this economy around.
It’s obvious why being good stewards of our economy is so important. It is more than just creating new jobs or the ability to pay down our credit cards; it is about reducing America’s growing household defcit. We do not want to go down in history as the generation that left the biggest debt behind. Another obvious reason is that it is easier to give when you have. Tere are many not-for-proft programs worthy of our attention that have a much better chance of being funded if the world economy is growing.
So, I’m saying make it happen for yourself, and as a result you will make it happen for the nation and the world. But how, you may ask, can I make it happen for me when I’m already working as hard as I can? Here are 7 ways I can think of:
- You need to start with the premise that you CAN increase your productivity. 95% of people who work, teach, create art or play sports can increase their efectiveness. Once you allow your mind to focus on increasing your productivity you will be surprised how many ways you can fnd to do that. Start by looking at your hour, your day and your week to see if you are doing the tasks that matter and measure how focused you are on getting them done.
- You have to understand that opportunities will not come to you, but that YOU have to seek out the opportunities and convert them into results.
- Do not confuse “being busy” or “getting a lot done” with productivity. Make an honest assessment of whether the hour spent was the best use of your time and talent as it pertains to advancing your own goals and those of your team and company
- Leave your comfort zone. Positive change is not going to happen if you are not willing to try something new and discover new ways to achieve better results.
- Go the extra mile. In trying times, this phrase has more value than ever and can come in many forms. It could be as simple as a “thank you,” or it could mean that you will take the night to rewrite a proposal. If you’re able to increase your overall productivity, it will not necessarily result in constant over-time. Instead, hard work will pay dividends.
- Do more than what is expected of you. Tis is one of the most gratifying and efective ways to increase your productivity. Simply adhering to what you think your job responsibilities entail, more often than not will no longer cut it.
- Ask for help. By not talking to the people around, you might be missing out on new opportunities or solutions to current problems. You are not alone in this quest and by opening yourself up, you will fnd that others have the same need to share ideas and fnd ways to make things happen.
Wanting to be successful is at the core of our culture and the very reason why we should be hopeful that together we can turn the economy around and build a better society for us and our children. Be hopeful, believe in yourself, and, most importantly, start making it happen for you today -- history will thank you later.
Sincerely,
Marc Frey
