Parents Night Out
Through August
The Sandbox, an interactive children’s museum, is offering “Parent’s Night Out — Kid’s Night In” from 6-9 p.m. Wednesdays through August at the museum, 18A Pope Ave. The program is designed for children ages 3-9 and includes a pizza dinner, arts and crafts projects and supervised play throughout the hands-on museum with a fun take-home toy for each child. Mother-child workout
Through August
Once Upon a Workout, a stroller fitness class for moms and children ages 6 weeks and older, will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. Mondays and Fridays in The Mall at Shelter Cove’s Center Court; 9 a.m. Wednesdays at the Island Recreation Center; and from 10 a.m. to noon Thursdays at a tobe-announced location. The class offers a full-body workout focusing on cardio, strength and flexibility, as well as a networking opportunity for moms. Membership is $149 for three months unlimited; $99 for a 12-class punch card; $55 for one month unlimited; $275 for six months unlimited; or $550 for a year unlimited. FRESH PRODUCE, FUN

Farmers Market The Mall at Shelter Cove will offer fresh vegetables and fruit at a farmers market from 8 a.m. to noon Thursdays in the Center Court. For more information, call 843-686-3090.

The Farmers Market of Bluffton is open to the public from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursdays, rain or shine, at 40 Calhoun St. in Bluffton. The July theme is “Picnics and Patriots,” which will include a variety of activities throughout the month:

  • Local children are invited to the Kid’s Corner, food and Nintendo Wii games during the July 2 market. The Bluffton Historical Preservation Society and Heyward House Historical Center will sponsor a Q&A about local history. Bill Dupont, a blues musician, will perform until 6 p.m. Additionally, a wellness tent will feature Carla Golden, a local health blogger of www.OneHealthyGirl.comChange, Change, Change, during the July 2 and July 9 markets.
  • The master gardeners with Laura Lee Rose will offer gardening tips and answer questions July 9. First Baptist Church will sponsor a bake sale. Yostie the Puppeteer will provide a show in the Kid’s Corner.
  • J. Howard Duff, known as the Bluffton Blues man, will sing and play guitar July 16. Melons and sprinklers will be available in the Kid’s Corner.
  • Willy Cohen, a local musician with a Caribbean sound, will perform on steel drums July 23.

Comedy relief
Through Aug. 2
Several renowned comedians will hit the stage at 9 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Saturdays through Aug. 2 at the Hilton Head Comedy Club in Pineland Station:

  • Through July 5: Derek Richards is a USO tour veteran.
  • July 7-12: Carl LaBove offers 20 years of comedy under his belt.
  • July 14-19: Jimmy Carroll is a well-traveled comic who has toured throughout the world.
  • July 21-26: Benny Baker is a 20-year veteran of live comedy clubs, and has performed at concert venues, on radio, and in television and movies.
  • July 28-Aug. 2: Mark Klein combines a pro-business message and comedy.

Kids and kazoos
Through Aug. 10

Kazoo king Rick Hubbard will sponsor a family show with music and comedy from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays through Aug. 10 at Hilton Head Comedy Club in Pineland Station. Tickets are $5 for adults. Children are free. The event will include a show and dinner, not included in ticket price. Everyone in the audience will receive a free kazoo to join in the kazoo band. Hubbard is a well-known local performer with 22 years of experience entertaining families. He has performed at Disney World, the Seattle International Children’s Festival and the Kennedy Center. Jazz Corner concerts

The Jazz Corner will present a monthlong line-up of jazz performances, including the Lavon Stevens Quartet featuring Louise Spencer, July 3; the Howard Paul Quartet, featuring multiinstrumentalist Kirk Lee, July 10-11; the Bobby Ryder Quartet, July 17-18; the Earl Williams Quartet, July 24-25; the EquinoxJazz Quintet, July 31 and Aug. 1. Community outreach events

The First Presbyterian Church will sponsor a “Dress a Dog” picnic and a hands-on “Animals of the Lowcountry” program at 6 p.m. July 1 and Aug. 5. The church also will sponsor a free summer movie night, showing “Swiss Family Robinson” at 7 p.m. July 9. Refreshments will be provided. Beaufort Water Festival

50 EVENTS AND COUNTING

Beaufort Water FestivalJuly 10-19 Summer isn’t official until the Beaufort Water Festival opens up this month, when droves of locals and visitors from across the country can be seen along Beaufort’s Waterfront Park. Join in the fun, from July 10-19, with more than 50 events, including fishing tournaments, live entertainment, barbecue, arts and crafts, water sports and more.

Admission for events run the gamut. An $85 season pass for all eight nights is available. Most of the events will take place at Beaufort Waterfront Park, unless otherwise noted. Also available is a free shuttle service to and from the Beaufort County Multi-Government Center on the corner of Ribaut Road and Boundary Street. Here’s a brief rundown of the Water Festival’s main events:

  • Opening ceremonies will take place at 7 p.m. July 10 at Waterfront Park with a special performance by the Parris Island Marine Band and a fireworks show. The event is free to the public.
  • Check out Little Big Town at the Concert In the Park from 8 p.m. to midnight July 11. Tickets are $25.
  • Teens ages 13-17 are invited to the annual Teen Dance, slated from 8-11 p.m. July 12. DJ Ross Brown will provide entertainment. Admission is $10.
  • It’s a Water Festival tradition: Motown Monday, with a performance by Golden Touch, is from 8-11 p.m. July 13. Admission is $5 or free for all active-duty military.
  • Check out the local crop of entertainment at the Talent Show from 7-11 p.m. July 15. Admission is $10 or free with a 2009 Beaufort Water Festival T-shirt.
  • Tempt your tastebuds at the Lowcountry Supper from 6-11 p.m., with supper from 6-7:30 p.m. July 16. Enjoy music from The Chilly Willy Band, The Whistlers and The Swinging Medallions. Admission is $15. The shuttle service runs from 6 p.m. to midnight.
  • Don’t miss the Bed Race from Harrington to Newcastle streets at 5 p.m. July 17. Meet on Bay Street. There is an entry fee for participants. Shark Radio and B Town Playaz will set the tone for the River Dance from 8 p.m. to midnight July 17. Admission is $12. Must be 18 years or older to attend.
  • The Water Festival Grand Parade from 10 a.m. to noon July 18 will take place in downtown Beaufort. The Commodore’s Ball will cap the evening off from 8 p.m. to midnight with entertainment by General Johnson and the Chairmen of the Board. Admission is $10.

Picnic & Pops
July 1, 15, 29

Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra presents “Picnic & Pops,” a family concert in the park, under the Performance Shell in Shelter Cove. Performances are all at 8 p.m. “A Star Spangled Salute!” will be presented July 1, “Bravo Brass!” July 15 and “Broadway Tonight!” July 29. Guests are invited to pack a picnic and bring chairs and blankets. The gate opens at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $20.

Literary lunch
July 1, 29

The University of South Carolina Beaufort’s July Jamboree will bring two Southern authors for the “Lunch With Author” series at noon July 1 and July 29. Dorothea Benton Frank will debut her new book, “Return to Sullivans Island,” at noon July 1 at the Sea Pines Country Club. Mary Alice Monroe will discuss “Last Light Over Carolina” on the shrimping industry at noon July 29 at the Dockside Restaurant in Port Royal.

Firecracker 5000
July 3, 4

Beaufort County’s largest and oldest road race, The Firecracker 5000, is slated for 8 a.m. July 4 at The Mall at Shelter Cove. Runners are asked to pick up their packets between 3 and 7 p.m. July 3 in the mall’s Center Court. More than 1,000 runners and walkers from across the country are expected to participate. The family event also will feature live music, fresh fruit, ice-cold refreshments and door prizes. A percentage of proceeds will benefit local charities. Seafood and wine pairings
July 7

Benny Hudsons’ Seafood, the north Hilton Head Island retail seafood market, will sponsor Tasteful Tuesdays throughout the summer, a free event that includes a presentation on the history of the five generations of Hudsons and their life on the island since the 1800s coupled with an educational program on local seafood. Tasteful Tuesdays also will offer live cooking demonstrations with samples of seafood and wine from the Island Winery. The events will occur the first Tuesday of every month. HEADLINERS RELEASE NEW CD

HEADLINERS RELEASE NEW CDJuly 1, 2, 8, 22 Hilton Head Island’s popular six-member band The Headliners recently released a new compact disc called“Kick Off Your Shoes.”

With 17 tracks of “oldies but goodies,” from Jacki Gore’s “I Love Beach Music” to Curtis Mayfield’s “It’s All Right,” the new CD follows The Headliners’ long tradition of entertaining people of all ages. The group’s next performances are from 5 to 8 p.m. July 1, 8 and 22 at the Shops at Sea Pines and from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. July 2 at the XO Lounge in the Hilton Oceanfront Resort.

Main Street Youth Theatre will present “Willy Wonka” from July 8 through Aug. 15. Hilton Head Heroes will sponsor “Cruisin’ on the Calibogue with Champagne and Chocolate,” from 8 to 10 p.m. July 11 at The Spirit of Harbour Town dock in Sea Pines Resort. The cost is $75 per person, which includes chocolate, cheese, fruit, homemade desserts, champagne, wine and entertainment. All proceeds benefit Hilton Head Heroes, whose mission is to bring families with children between ages 4 and 18 who are suffering from lifethreatening illnesses for a resort vacation on Hilton Head Island. Art Show

The Society of Bluffton Artists (SOBA) will present “Escape the Ordinary,” impressionist paintings by Joy Lillith Hermann.

The exhibit will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday July 13 through Aug. 22 at the SOBA Gallery, 48 Boundary St. in Bluffton. A reception with refreshments will be held for the artist from 3 to 5 p.m. July 19 at the gallery. Hermann’s work is known for its depictions of nature with texture, unusual surfaces and vibrant colors. She credits her father for her love of nature; he would often say, “Look beyond the obvious in nature, as there is a beauty that constantly changes.” Before leaving St. Louis in 2005, she was the only artist invited to display her work at the Rockwood Framing Gallery from 2003-2004. She apprenticed with Roy Schallenberg in 2007 and has exhibited her work in many local art shows.

Church concert
July 12

The Church of the Cross, Buckwalter Campus, will hold a concert in support of its mission team that is headed to Belize this summer. The concert is slated for 2 p.m. July 12 at the church, 495 Buckwalter Parkway. The concert is free to the public. Sallie Ann Robinson, a Daufuskie Island native and Gullah cookbook author, will lead a special presentation called “Gullah Cooking and Living” at 3 p.m. July 15 and Aug. 19 at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn. Robinson was one of Pat Conroy’s students during his stay on Daufuskie Island. Shrimp, craps and fish also will be featured during the event. EXHIBIT EXPLORES SUMMER

PHOTOS COURTESY OF ART LEAGUEJuly 13-Aug. 8 The Art League will present “Summer Dreams,” a themed show by league artists and July Jubilee, an art exclusive in which all work is priced under $300.

An opening reception will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. July 14 at the Art League of Hilton Head Gallery, 430 William Hilton Parkway, Suite 237. More than 100 artists interpreted their plans, dreams and ideas for “Summer Dreams,” an exhibit which will be held in The Island Room, typically reserved for one artist’s work. The July 13-Aug. 8 show will feature paintings, photographs, artisan works and jewelry by league members, including Anita Stephen, Joyce Nagel, Virginia MacKenzie, Ed Funk, J. Get the lowdown on the latest treatments for menopause with a light-hearted seminar and take in a few laughs with a viewing of the Arts Center of Coastal  Carolina’s “Menopause the Musical” July 16 at the Arts Center.

The event kicks off at 6 p.m. with a reception and a seminar on menopause at 6:30 p.m. led by Dr. Tracy Gaudet, an OBGYN and director of the Duke Integrative Medicine Center. Quilt guild
July 16

The Palmetto Quilt Guild will hold a meeting at 1 p.m. July 16 at Christ Lutheran Church, 829 William Hilton Parkway on Hilton Head Island. Wendy Analla, the 2008 Hilton Head Quilt Festival’s “Viewers Choice” winner, will lead the meeting with a discussion and trunk show of her award-winning pictorial quilts. Members and guests are invited for a private gathering at 12:30 p.m. The guest fee is $5. Guild members also invite the public to the new Quilt Gallery for a free display of guild members’ quilts, such as bed quilts, wall hangings, children’s quilts, pictorial quilts and all styles of quilts from appliqué to traditional. Gutenberg! The Musical!
July 16-Aug. 2

The South Carolina Repertory Company will present the twoman musical spoof, “Gutenberg! The Musical!,” at 8 p.m. July 16-18, 22-25, 28-31 and Aug. 1 with 2 p.m. matinees July 19, 26 and Aug. 2 at the theater, 136 Beach City Road on Hilton Head Island. Tickets range from $15 for students to $28 for adults. Written by Scott Brown and Anthony King, the play revolves around aspiring playwrights performing a splashy musical about the inventor of the printing press, Johann Gutenberg.

The duo sing and play all the parts in their crass historical epic with the hope that one of the producers from the audience will give them a Broadway contact. “Talkbacks,” which are Q&A sessions with the cast, will follow the July 22 and 28 performances. Gallery Show

Natalie DaiseONE-WOMAN SHOW

July 31-Aug. 10 Natalie Daise, artist and educator, will present “Mouth to Hand,” a gallery show and performance at ARTworks in Beaufort.

The gallery will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. July 31 through Aug. 10, with a special reception for the artist July 31. Daise will present a one-woman show Aug. 7-8 in the black box theater at ARTworks.

Daise is known as a co-creator of “Gullah Gullah Island,” a children’s television show that ran on Nick Jr. from 1994 to 1999.

A series of birding programs will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. July 22 and Aug. 19 at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn. Participants will be led by an experienced bird watcher around the 68-acre property’s unique habitats that include salt marsh, maritime forest and open fields. The diverse birds seen around Honey Horn often include summer tanager, eastern kingbird, painted bunting, yellow-bellied sapsucker, egrets and herons. The cost is $10 per person. The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Offce will sponsor a golf tournament July 31 at Tradition Hilton Head’s National Golf Club in Hardeeville. Registration is slated for 8 a.m. and shotgun starts at 9 a.m. Butler Chrysler Dodge Jeep will sponsor a 2009 Jeep Wrangler for a hole-in-one prize. The format includes two-man teams, shooting six holes Captain’s Choice, six holes best ball and six holes alternate shot. The tournament is limited to 30 teams. The public is asked to donate blood during the Trew Friends Blood Drive from 1 to 6 p.m. July 31 at Hilton Head Preparatory School’s Joseph B. The blood drive is sponsored by the Heather Trew Foundation for Organ Donation and Research, which was established to honor a 17-yearold whose life was tragically cut short due to complications from chronic renal failure. Through Sept. 6 An easy, fun and free way for the whole family to enjoy what Hilton Head Island has to offer is to check out a Shannon Tanner show.

The singer and guitar player will expand his summer performances through July with two Sunday shows in addition to two nightly performances Monday through Friday through Sept. 4 at the outdoor amphitheater in Shelter Cove Harbour on Hilton Head Island. Performances are held at 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. and are free to the public. Tanner also will be the featured performer for Shelter Cove’s annual Fourth of July celebration at 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. The July 4 event will kick off at 6 p.m. and will include a fireworks display after dusk.

The Hilton Head Dance Theatre will feature the ballet, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” during the annual Summer Gala at 7:30 p.m. Aug. 1 and at 2:30 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina. Karena Brock-Carlyle will direct the play to music by Felix Mendelssohn. The Summer Gala is a tribute to Terpsichore, the Greek muse of dance. Charity Tournament
Sept. 21

Colleton River’s Nicklaus course will sponsor the Palmetto Animal League Charity Golf Tournament Sept. 21. Tee time is 9 a.m. The registration deadline is Sept. 11. The format is a two best ball shamble with mulligans, various prizes and a silent auction. Cost is $175 per person or $700 per team, which includes golf, prizes and lunch.
