ARTS CENTER, MSYT ANNOUNCE FALL SEASONS

For its 15th anniversary, the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina is presenting a People’s Choice season that mixes Broadway gems and modern classics.

The series kicks off with American classics “Man of La Mancha” and “Hello, Dolly!” followed by three recent Broadway hits: “Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps,” “Hairspray” and “Smokey Joe’s Café.

Winner of five Tony Awards, “La Mancha” (through Oct. 24) follows the eccentric knight Don Quixote and Sancho Panza and features the title track, “Dulcinea” and the iconic “The Impossible Dream.” “Hello, Dolly!,” (Dec. 1-26), finds matchmaker Dolly Levi deciding it’s time to find a match for herself alongside songs such as “Put on Your Sunday Clothes” and “Before the Parade Passes You By.”

In the spirit of last season’s madcap “Boeing-Boeing” comes “Alfred Hitchcock’s The 39 Steps,” (Feb. 8-27, 2011), a mix of spy tale, zany comedy and absurd whodunit. The winner of eight Tonys (including Best Musical), “Hairspray” (April 27-May 29) brings a cast of richly drawn characters and a bright score. And rounding out the season is “Smokey Joe’s Café” ( June 21-July 31), featuring the malt-shop sounds of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller.

The season will also include a four-show Presenting Series, which includes the world-famous Parsons Dance Company ( Jan. 15, 2011); the battle of the sexes comedy “Defending the Caveman” (Feb. 14); the longstanding New Orleans treasure the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (March 28); and the Second City improv troupe (Aug. 10-11).
