Large Format Photography by Ben Ham
When/Where: Through Jan. 22 at the Walter Greer Gallery, Arts Center of Coastal Carolina
The Scoop: Award-winning landscape photographer Ben Ham works exclusively with an 8x10 wooden folding field camera, capturing images on black and white film. His work will be on display in an exhibit titled “The Journey: Large Format Photography by Ben Ham.” The collection includes limited-edition prints of the Rockies, the Southwest, California wine country and the Lowcountry. Island Gifts Exhibit

The Scoop: SoBA will present “Island Gifts,” recent watercolor works by Betty Luntey. She spends her winters on Hilton Head and summers on Shelter Island, New York.
On Shelter Island, she and her husband maintain an extensive garden dedicated to flowers. That garden is the inspiration for many of Luntey’s works.

The Scoop: A show of acrylics and water-colors by Marilyn Dizikes and cast metal miniature figures by Dean Dizikes. Hargray Hilton Head Snow Day

The Scoop: Build a snowman or frolic in a field of snow Jan. 23 when the Shelter Cove Community Park will be turned into a winter wonderland during the fifth annual Hargray Hilton Head Snow Day. Children are invited to take advantage of the inflatable rides, including a 35-foot high slide, to munch on hot dogs, hamburgers and pizza and to roast marshmal-lows over a fire pit. Additionally, the Junior League’s “Kids in the Kitchen” will showcase food from across the country. Admission is $10 for children 3-17, which includes the snow field and all the rides you can ride. Charleston Boat Show

When/Where: From noon-6 p.m. Jan. 22, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Jan. 23 and from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Jan. 24 at the North Charleston Convention Center
The Scoop: The 30th Annual Charleston Boat Show is the Lowcountry’s biggest boat show and sale featuring the latest models, many offered at discount prices. Exhibitors will feature an extensive assortment of the latest in marine and fishing products. Also scheduled are adult finishing clinics, kids fishing clinics, kids painting classes with a jump castle and face painting, a fishing simulator, boating safety trailer and music and contests with WEZL Radio. This year the Charleston Boat Show is partnering with the Lowcountry Food Bank to give back to the local community. Organizers are asking that attendees bring five canned goods to the show for $2 off the admission, which is $8 for adults, $3 for kids ages 4-12 and $5 after 5 p.m. Parking is free. www.thecharlestonboatshow.com

Half Marathon, 10K and 5K

When/Where: 8 a.m. Feb. 6 from Jarvis Creek Park
The Scoop: The 8th Annual Time Warner Cable Hilton Head Island Half Marathon & 10K/5K benefits Strive to Excel and The Hilton Head Island Children’s Memorial Garden. The half marathon will take participants down Natures Way, Pembroke Road, the Cross Island Expressway over Broad Creek, through the woods at Crossings Park and back over the expressway to Jarvis Creek. The 10K and 5K will start and finish at Jarvis Creek and will feature various group divisions. Gift cards and prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female overall finishers. Walkers of all ages and ability also are encouraged to participate. There will be a free Toddler Trot for kids 8 and under. Parking for the event will be at Hilton Head High School. Bell Choir

American Ballet Theatre II

When/Where: Jan. 16 at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina
The Scoop: The newest young stars of American Ballet Theatre II will kick off the Arts Center’s Presenting Series this January with a performance of classical and contemporary works featuring the traditions of the revered New York dance company. Handpicked from around the world, these talented dancers participate in a rigorous training and touring schedule. Among the famed works to be included in the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina’s Jan. 16 performance is the pas de deux from the second act of Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” and “Le Corsaire Pas de Trois.” As part of the Arts Center program, the company will present “Barbara,” a piece choreographed for them by Aszure Barton in 2007. The program also will include “Pavlovsk,” a duet based on the true story of a Russian general assassinated in 1799. The Presenting Series will continue March 16 with a concert by Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience and May 17 with the one-man show “Say Goodnight Gracie,” about the life of George Burns.
