The Scoop: Visitors can examine mounted specimens alongside photographs by local naturalists and artists during a special presentation of habitats, flora and fauna considered endangered in the Lowcountry. Also scheduled are lectures and programs about animals that are not protected by law but are still decreasing in number for different reasons. Artist John Davey will present a series of 15 engravings. The exhibit is family friendly with a scavenger hunt for younger visitors.

Ted Jordan’s “Tribute”

The Scoop: Te d Jordan’s “Tribute,” a series of drawings, pays homage to the 1959 food in Zanesville, Ohio, the site where runaway slaves from the South escaped into tunnels of the Underground Railroad that led to basements of the grand old houses lining the riverbanks. In the winter of 1959, two rivers that brought runaway slaves to the area swept through the black neighborhood, spilling into the old Victorian clapboard houses, forcing families to fee by boat. Evans worked as a legal secretary and raised a family before she went back to school to study art at the College of DuPage. Her career began in clay as a ceramic artist, and then she switched to paintings. In particular, she worked in liturgical art, pulpit hangings and banners for churches in Illinois, Utah and Puerto Rico. The Scoop: The 27th Annual Heritage Days is a three-day event with food, music, seminars, arts and crafts, a parade and folk traditions of the Gullah, descendants of West Africans. This year’s theme — “An HBCU Reunion Weekend: The Homecoming” — will recognize the legacy of our nation’s Historical Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). The event kicks off Nov. 12 with a tribute to the historic school’s founders from 3-4 p.m. at Brick Baptist Church Cemetery on St. Helena Island. An opening ceremony with a presentation of the flags of the Gullah people by Beaufort County school children will be held from 4-5 p.m. Nov. 12 at Penn Center. Other notable events include a symposium and luncheon from 10 a.m-1 p.m. Nov. 13 at St. Helena Elementary School, which will include a panel of HBCU presidents and commissioners from the National Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor to discuss the culture’s development and preservation. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the Penn Center. Also scheduled Nov. 13 is a Kids’ Day from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. with Gullah storytellers, step teams, craft demonstrations, food, music and dancers. Later that day, from 6:30 p.m. to midnight, guests are invited to a fish fry, oyster roast, crab crack and blues on the Penn Center grounds. Tickets range from $6-$15. One of the highlights this year will be “Growing the Dream” Nov. 13 traveling exhibit, a multimedia educational program on the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Children will have the opportunity to walk though a a two-thirds scaled replica of his boyhood home while participating in exercises of freedom and justice.
