NOV. 2, 11 AND DEC. 2
Endangered in the Lowcountry

When/Where: Through December at the Discovery House at the Coastal Discovery Museum at Honey Horn; special events include a lecture about the bald eagle population in South Carolina at 2 p.m. Nov. 2; Sea Turtle Protection Project at 2 p.m. Nov. 11; and a presentation of the piping plover currently listed on the U.S. Endangered Species Act at 2 p.m. Dec. 2
The Scoop: Visitors can examine mounted specimens alongside photographs by local naturalists and artists during a special presentation of habitats, flora and fauna considered endangered in the Lowcountry. Also scheduled are lectures and programs about animals that are not protected by law but are still decreasing in number for different reasons. Artist John Davey will present a series of 15 engravings. The exhibit is family friendly with a scavenger hunt for younger visitors.

Digital Camera Class

Introduction to Airbrushing

The Scoop: Learn about the history and applications of airbrushing.

Art, Artifice and Acquisition

The Scoop: This is a three-day event to celebrate the University of South Carolina Beaufort’s Golden Jubilee. The opening reception features Chancellor Jane Upshaw to kick off a year-round celebration of the university’s 50 years of service to the Lowcountry. The lecture series will include speakers Llewellyn (Kelly) Dykes, who will share his career as a police officer turned appraiser; Ulrush Boser, a reporter who writes about culture, politics and social issues; and Ronni Baer, senior curator at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Clay Wall Pocket Workshop

The Scoop: Using this slab technique, the class will be creating a wall pocket to use indoors or on the patio as a planter. The Scoop: In this two-part workshop, participants will develop a keen eye through a series of observational exercises. Learn feld sketching techniques and what facts to record. Ted Jordan’s “Tribute”

The Scoop: Te d Jordan’s “Tribute,” a series of drawings, pays homage to the 1959 food in Zanesville, Ohio, the site where runaway slaves from the South escaped into tunnels of the Underground Railroad that led to basements of the grand old houses lining the riverbanks. In the winter of 1959, two rivers that brought runaway slaves to the area swept through the black neighborhood, spilling into the old Victorian clapboard houses, forcing families to fee by boat. When Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, Jordan remembered the Zanesville food. “Tribute” is the result. 681-5060, www.artleaguehhi.org

Iraq: The World My Son Saw

The Scoop: Artist Suzy Shealy explores the Iraq her son, Joseph, saw in this Veterans Day exhibit. She created the paintings from images saved on a zip drive from Joseph’s camera, returned with her son’s personal effects. Shealy, who had never painted, created paintings of her son’s life as a soldier in Iraq and the environment he found himself in. 842-5299. The Scoop: Helen Evans’ “Thru My Eyes,” will feature landscapes and florals. Evans worked as a legal secretary and raised a family before she went back to school to study art at the College of DuPage. Her career began in clay as a ceramic artist, and then she switched to paintings. In particular, she worked in liturgical art, pulpit hangings and banners for churches in Illinois, Utah and Puerto Rico. Rebecca Davenport exhibit

The Scoop: Rebecca Davenport will go back to her roots with “Who They Are,” a 1974 show at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Gallery Walk

When/ Where: From 3-8 p.m. Nov. 20 in Old Bluffton
The Scoop: Visitors can view more than 200 pieces, including pottery, fber, jewelry, glass, sculpture, basketry, turned wood, photography, painting and prints during the winter edition of the popular Art Walk. Wine and refreshments will be served at each gallery and live music will be held on Boundary and Calhoun streets. Local Art Display at Coastal States Bank

When/Where: Through December at Coastal States Bank next to the post office in Bluffton The Scoop: Artwork by Norma Deal and Joy Hermann, members of SoBA, will be on display for the next three months. Their art varies from contemporary to folk art with an emphasis on texture and originality.
